Every day, families across South Africa are forced to make a heartbreaking choice: give up their beloved dogs—or lose the roof over their heads.

Shelters are overflowing. Hundreds of healthy, loving dogs and cats are being euthanized every single day because housing complexes and estates continue to enforce outdated, unfair “no pets” or “small dogs only” rules.

Size doesn’t determine suitability.

A dog’s temperament, not their size, is what matters in a community. Many large-breed dogs are calm, quiet, and perfectly suited to estate living—yet they’re being discriminated against simply for their build.

Families are downsizing for safety, cost, and survival.

With the rising cost of living, more people are moving into secure housing. But this should not mean saying goodbye to a family member. Dogs are not disposable. They are companions, guardians, therapy, and unconditional love.

We are calling on housing estates, property developers, and homeowner associations to:

  1. End blanket “no pets” or “small dogs only” policies
  2. Adopt case-by-case pet approvals
  3. Keep families together
